Our Horseperson Pathway is designed to develop capable, balanced, and confident students through a structured, competency-based progression.
Each pillar builds on the next, supporting long-term growth, safety, and horse welfare. In practice, many lessons draw on all four pillars, with emphasis tailored to each individual’s stage and readiness.
We may not always ride — progression depends on how both the student and the horse show up on the day, including their emotional regulation, focus, and energy. Becoming an exceptional horseperson means far more than time spent in the saddle. Riding occurs when both horse and student are ready and regulated.
Hiddy & Co is not a traditional riding school or commercial trail riding centre.
We are a Health & Horses facility offering a complete, foundation-focused development program for those who wish to grow in skill, confidence, responsibility, and connection. If you are simply looking for casual rides or one-off experiences, some wonderful local providers may be better suited to your needs.
The 4 Pathway Pillars
Pillar 1 — Horsemanship & Connection Learning to understand, care for, and feel safe with horses.
Riders learn to:
- Approach, catch (catching game), and lead a horse safely (1 x horse, group of horses)
- Read basic horse body language and emotional signals
- Groom and tack up correctly (with supervision as needed)
- Understand safe positioning around horses
- Recognise signs of tension, relaxation, and distraction
- Move calmly and respectfully in paddocks and barn areas
- Develop awareness of environmental hazards (fences, terrain, weather)
- Build trust through consistency and quiet handling
- Understand horse welfare and workload considerations
This pillar builds emotional safety and mutual respect before riding skills are layered on.
Pillar 2 — Rider Body & Balance Learning to breathe, sit balanced, relaxed, and steady.
Riders learn to:
- Mount and dismount safely
- Maintain a balanced, independent seat at walk and trot
- Develop lower leg stability and correct foot position
- Maintain steady rein contact without gripping or pulling
- Breathe and regulate nerves while mounted
- Sit quietly without relying on the arena boundary
- Recover balance after small disruptions (loss of stirrup, rhythm change)
- Absorb movement without tension or panic
- Transition up and down between gaits with control and softness
This pillar builds the physical strength and body awareness required before competition, open-space riding, or jumping preparation.
Pillar 3 — Skill, Communication and Feel Learning how to steer, stop, go, and communicate kindly.
Riders learn to:
- Soft rein steer accurately and maintain direction
- Ride consistent circles and straight lines
- Maintain rhythm and pace
- Perform smooth upward and downward transitions
- Halt promptly and safely on instruction
- Apply timely and effective arena instruction to riding
- Respond immediately to verbal instruction
- Understand and apply basic emergency stop procedures
- Maintain safe spacing from other horses
- Ride without fence or physical boundary reliance
This pillar ensures riders demonstrate consistent control before progressing outside enclosed areas.
Pillar 4 — Confidence & Bravery Learning to feel calm, proud, and brave — even when things are new.
Riders learn to:
- Remain calm if a horse changes energy
- Regulate emotions when feeling unsure
- Accept feedback without escalation
- Ride in wider spaces without panic
- Demonstrate self-awareness of limits
- Ask for help when needed
- Recover emotionally after mistakes
- Show respect for safety boundaries
- Build resilience through structured progression
This pillar protects against over-facing and supports sustainable growth — for both horse and rider.
At Hiddy & Co, we believe strong foundations create capable, confident horsepeople for life. Whether your goals are connection, skill development, confidence building, or competition, everything begins with safety, feel, and partnership.
As part of your intake and booking online process, we ask questions about your experience, background, and goals so we can understand what you’re hoping to achieve. Thank you for taking the time to thoughtfully complete this.
If you’ve noted showjumping as a goal — that’s exciting, and we love your enthusiasm. Please note that learning to showjump is not simply about going over fences. It requires time to build A LOT OF THINGS, some such as balance, leg strength, flatwork foundations, rhythm, confidence, eye to the fence and feel.
While we develop all of these skills within our program, riders do not jump fences on Hiddy & Co horses. Jump progression occurs only after successful completion of our development phases and on a rider’s own horse.
We are here for those wanting depth, development, and genuine partnership with horses — not rushed outcomes. Thank you for choosing to begin this journey with us. We look forward to meeting you soon.
With heart (and horses),
Hiddy 😘
Please note: For the safety and well-being of both riders and horses, participation in ridden sessions is subject to individual assessment, current health status, and physical suitability. All sessions are offered at the coach’s discretion. A pre-booking FREE consultation is strongly encouraged to ensure the experience is safe, supportive, and appropriate for everyone involved.
