What if the most powerful conversations didn’t require words, but instead began with horses, presence and connection?
In a world that seems to get louder every day, we’re constantly encouraged to speak more, do more and move faster. We’re surrounded by notifications. Opinions. Deadlines. Conversations. To do’s. For many of us, genuine connection feels harder to find than ever.
It’s one reason why I love my horses, because they ask something very different.
They don’t need our words.
They don’t care how busy we’ve been.
They aren’t interested in our titles, our achievements or how productive we’ve been.
They simply meet us exactly as we are.
Horses ask for us to be present.
Presence Before Performance
As a riding coach, people often assume my work is all about teaching riders to improve their position, develop better communication, or achieve competition goals.
Those things absolutely matter.
I love helping riders build confidence, partnership with their horses, and achieve results.
But over the years I’ve realised something much bigger.
Some of the most important moments don’t happen in the saddle at all.
They happen while standing quietly in a paddock.
Leaning on a fence.
Sharing a breath.
Watching a horse graze.
Walking together without asking for anything in return.
Time with horses isn’t always about riding.
Sometimes it’s simply about remembering who you are.
Horses Notice What We Often Miss
One of the things I admire most about horses is their honesty.
They live entirely in the present moment.
They don’t carry yesterday’s worries.
They aren’t thinking about tomorrow’s to-do list.
They simply respond to what’s in front of them.
Because they’re prey animals, horses are incredibly aware of body language, breathing, posture and emotional energy.
Long before we say a single word, they’ve already noticed how we arrived.
Were we rushed? Calm? Anxious? Distracted? Present?
It’s not about judgement.
It’s simply how horses experience the world.
And perhaps that’s one of their greatest gifts.
They gently invite us to become aware of ourselves too.
The Quiet Power of Being Present
I’ve often said that the quiet work wins. Not just in riding. In life.
Some of the biggest shifts I’ve witnessed haven’t come from dramatic breakthroughs.
They’ve come from slowing down. Taking a breath. Choosing curiosity over control. Being willing to simply notice.
When we allow ourselves to become present, something changes.
Our breathing softens. Our shoulders relax. Our horses notice. And so do we.
More Than Riding
Over the past few years, Hiddy & Co has naturally grown.
Yes, we coach riders. Yes, we love helping people achieve their riding goals with their horses.
But more and more, we’re also welcoming people who aren’t looking to ride at all. Some simply want to spend time with horses.
Some are navigating life’s challenges. Some are looking for a different kind of conversation. Some just need somewhere quiet.
All of it is beautiful. Horses have never cared why we came. They simply ask us to show up honestly.
What Horses Teach Us
Horses remind us that listening is often more powerful than speaking.
Presence is more important than perfection.
Connection comes before confidence.
And sometimes the most meaningful conversations happen without a single word being spoken.
That’s something I don’t think we’ll ever stop needing.
A Gentle Invitation
Whether you visit us for rider coaching, counselling, equine-assisted therapy, or simply to spend time with these remarkable animals … my prayer is always the same:
That you leave feeling a little calmer. A little more connected. A little more like yourself. Because time with horses isn’t always about riding.
Sometimes … It’s about remembering who you are.
With heart (and horses),
Hiddy 😘
